Even if it's cold and grey outside all over in Switzerland, Ticino certainly has sunshine. As soon as you have crossed the Gotthard tunnel, you are in another world.
Ascona
Ascona is the pearl on the Lago Maggiore. A true paradise with its direct lakeside and the palm trees. The charming village is the lowest lying place in Switzerland – just above 196 meters above sea level. Ascona is famous for its mild climate and plenty of sunshine.
There are many restaurants and bars along the colorful lake promenade. The choice of restaurants is huge. In Ascona, people live according to the motto Dolce Vita and you can feel that. I mean this in a positive way. No matter how stressed you are, go to Ascona for 2-3 days and then you will be deeply relaxed.
Sonogno
Sonogno is the furthest village in the Valle Verzasca. The village has preserved its characteristic townscape with old houses and alleys. The village is very small but beautiful to look at. It is also a good starting point for a short hike along the emerald, green waters of the Verzasca. Wonderful!
I recommend taking a picnic with you as there are not many Restaurants in this area, but there are even more beautiful places where you can just sit down.
Locarno
Locarno is the film city from Switzerland. The Piazza Grande, the pulsating heart of Locarno, completes the rich artistic offer. In addition to a large selection of restaurants and shops, most cultural and leisure events take place here. From the renowned Locarno Film Festival, the most important film festival in Switzerland, to the Moon&Stars concerts, where international music stars enchant the audience in a unique atmosphere, from the enchanting Locarno on Ice, the ice rink with the fairytale bar igloos in the middle of town, to folk festivals and the weekly market.
Hotel & Restaurant
During our Ticino weekend we stayed at Hotel Boutique-Hotel La Rocca. The hotel is in Porto Ronco. Porto Ronco is also a part of Ascona but is about 10 minutes away with the car. The hotel has a magical location, and the view is brilliant. (Link)
The hotel has a great restaurant with a fantastic view, the Ristorante Panoramico. You can enjoy a risotto from the kitchen chef Antonio, who is the Ticino Risotto Champion 2019 and 2020. Buon Appetito! You can eat at this restaurant without staying in the Hotel, but I would recommend you booking a table.
Another great restaurant in Ticino is the restaurant Ristorante Pizzeria Gabietta. They serve incredibly great pizzas and traditional dishes from Ticino. Besides, the restaurant is right by the lake.
I have to say, that I will certainly go to Ticino again soon, because it’s one of my favorite places in Switzerland and the food is amazing.
