Val Müstair - the valley between the Ofenpass and South Tyrol

The idyllic Val Müstair fascinates with its beauty and integrity. In spring surrounded by beautiful wildflower meadows, in winter the valley comes to rest and presents itself in a snow-covered fairytale world. Welcome to the Biosfera Val Müstair.

Our accommodation

The world has changed. In mid-March, Switzerland decided to go into a lockdown. All hotels, restaurants, activities, and many shops were closed. We wanted to go on holiday to Austria but were not allowed to leave Switzerland. So, we spontaneously decided to spend our winter holidays in Val Müstair. We found a great place to stay on the internet - the Chalets Trafögl.

The romantic chalets on the edge of the forest of the village Müstair on the green meadow, where you can let your soul dangle. Simply switch off and enjoy the peace and quiet. In the living room we spent cozy evenings in front of the warming stove. The bedrooms were also totally cozy and the furnishings were also good. Unfortunately, the chalet didn't have a dishwasher, but as we had plenty of time, that wasn't too bad. I really liked the terrace. A great wooden table and bench decorated the terrace and we really enjoyed eating out there. As mentioned above, all the restaurants were closed, so we always cooked ourselves. There is a shop (Volk) in the village which has everything.

What is also important, you cannot pay for the accommodation with a credit card. We had to transfer 1/3 at the time of booking and pay 2/3 in cash before departure.

Hiking

With its breathtaking views, fascinating flora and fauna and instructive insights into nature and culture, the hiking world of Val Müstair makes a home for everyone. And there is much to discover - as small and manageable as the valley may seem at first glance.

Unesco World Heritage Kloster St. Johann

It is the undisputed flagship of Val Müstair - the UNESCO World Heritage monastery of St. Johann attracts guests from near and far to the valley. The church houses the largest and best-preserved fresco cycle from the early Middle Ages, and the monastery museum brings the 1200-year history of the monastery to life.

The monastery of St. Johann is also the eponym of the entire Val Müstair, because the gradual settlement of the valley followed the establishment of the monastery. This is how the valley came to be known as Münstertal or Val Müstair, because the Latin word for monastery is "monasterium".
