Bern - the capital city

The old town of Bern has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983. It fascinates with its imposing buildings and its unmistakable charm. You can admire the small alleys, the bears from the Bern Bear Park, the Bundesplatz and many other sights.

Bear Park

Bern has a very long relationship with the bears. In 1515, the first bear pit is opened. Since 1857 bears have been kept in a two-part moat at the lower end of the old town. To improve bear keeping the historic facility was extensively renovated from 1994 to 1996. Despite this improvement, the facility remained a ‘’pit’’. Numerous complaints from Switzerland and abroad, as well as the new legal framework, prompted a fundamental rethink of bear management in Bern. Today the Bear Park is an attraction known far beyond the borders. Since 2009 the bears have access to an animal friendly 6000 square metre park where they can stay 24 hours a day and 365 days a year and live out their natural behavior.

Old town

Bern's old town has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983 and is considered a great example of a clear and progressive urban foundation. Thanks to the preservation of historical monuments, which has the task of preserving and maintaining the historical fabric in and on the buildings, these basic structures are respected and adhered to. With success! Because the unmistakable charm of the old town impresses not only guests from all over the world, but also locals.

Bundesplatz

The Bundesplatz is the square directly in front of the Bundeshaus in the capital city of Bern. State receptions, political rallies and various events take place there. The 26 fountains of the water feature on the Bundesplatz represent the 26 cantons of Switzerland. Sometimes in time, sometimes at random, the water sprays seemingly directly from the stone slabs up to seven metres into the air.

Restaurant

The Sky Terrace is a great rooftop bar with a magnificent view over the capital and the Alps around Bern. In summer you can enjoy the sun and the refreshing cocktails. Seasonal snacks are also offered, and they are very tasty. We had delicious humus with pita bread and Bao Buns.
