From 1 October 2021 you will need a valid passport to enter Scotland.

Safety

The situation is stable. However, caution is adviced around demonstrations as rioting is possible. The British authorities point out the risk of terrorist attacks.

The official language is English, but Scottish can also be heard in many places.

Currency and means of payment

In Scotland you pay in pounds (GBP). You can pay everywhere with credit card. It is accepted as a means of payment in all shops. Mastercard and Visa being the most common. Generally you can withdraw money from ATMs with both cards, which is recommended for bars or pubs. Due to the hustle, cash payments are preferred.

Tip

Altough tipping is generally not very common in Scotland, it is customary to tip in restaurants or taxis if you have received good service. Ten percent is normal, but most will be happy to receive any kind of tip.

Driving a car

Remember to drive on the left. Keep left when starting off or when turning from one road to another. When entering a roundabout, give way to traffic coming from the right. 

National holiday

30. November - St Andrew's Day is the national holiday and it is the commemoration of the Apostle Andrew
